Although located in Coleraine town centre CRUN works across the whole Causeway and Northern HSCT area supporting rural as well as urban groups. We are a dedicated network organisation providing an accessible service to community groups and activists as evidenced by the 240 plus groups (many of whom were set up with the professional support of CRUN community development staff) who avail of our services for mentoring and development support as well as administrative and financial resources.
CRUN has witnessed major growth since its inception and currently employs fourteen paid staff members. Alongside our core community development activities we also implement projects targeting substance misuse, positive mental health, peacebuilding and youth inclusion providing a wraparound approach to the issues in marginalised and complex ‘high need’ communities.
CRUN is an Open College Network (OCN) and accredited centre delivering established and bespoke courses designed by CRUN staff, in Community Development, Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Good Relations, Diversity, Event Management, Public Fundraising, and the DRIVE programme for youth . The provision of accessible accredited community education has enabled participants to be involved in social and civic life and contribute to the development of their respective organisations. Since 2007, the OCN accredited training courses provided by CRUN has been successfully delivered to over 1200 participants at Levels 1, 2 and 3. As a Chartered Institute of Environmental Health registered training centre we are able to deliver level 1,2 and 3 food safety qualifications.
Knowledge of the Sector
CRUN has been operating since 1999 and has supported over 300 community and voluntary organisations in the Borough since inception. Our core business has been the provision of community development support and mentoring to individuals and groups. We support community associations, faith groups, youth groups, cultural clubs, sports clubs, section 75 groups and special interest groups to achieve their aims and objectives by raising their capacity to deliver on their action plans.
We have a high level of awareness of the issues which groups face both in the rural and urban areas and work closely both with grass roots organisations, supporting organisations and statutory agencies. Our knowledge of the area is highly developed and we are aware of the issues facing not only groups in areas of high deprivation, but also coastal and rural communities and areas which while seemingly affluent have a high level of hidden disadvantage due to the impact of austerity measures.
